prophet: What’s your name and what do you do?
BH: Black Hibiscus and I’m a musician
prophet: What’s it like being a musician in New York?
BH: Its pretty cool, its a cool scene in New York everyone makes everything so its a lot of artists getting together trying to support each other
prophet: How would you try to describe your sound?
BH: I would say I like to make soulful music, but I like to touch on all sorts of genres; rnb, hiphop, electronic music, even pop every now and then but at the core it I like to get a soulful touch.
prophet: What’s a surprising artist that you draw inspiration from?
BH: Hmm chuckles JPEG Mafia he makes very aggressive music, but he produces with a level of detail that I always look up too - It’s like every single second there’s ear candy.
prophet: So you’re touring ‘ Growing Pains’ on Sunday, where did the name come - talk us through the project?
BH: So this is first project I’ve worked on since graduating, my entire life has changed since coming out of University, So it’s like discovering myself again for the first time. Getting the opportunity to decide who I want to be is intense and requires a lot of growth - and a lot of that growth came with second guessing myself and pain. It just felt very fitting.
prophet: If you were tour our outside of the US, where would be your dream location?
BH: I think… Japan. There’s just so much culture, it would be so cool to experience even if just for a week.
prophet: If you could ask another creative a question what would you ask them?
BH: I always like to ask people why they create. It says a lot about you spiritually. For me I started creating out a deep love of music, movies and design its just things in the world that captivate my attention and my heart. Music and creating things in general is a spiritual vehicle for me. Creating things Allows me to draw from a deep place that I can’t address consciously, I always end up somewhere different. Its always nice to be reminded that I can go anywhere.
